Choosing a name for your small business is an important decision. Unfortunately, it’s also a complicated process. You want to get the name just right, and sometimes it seems like every idea you come up with just doesn’t fit. To help you out, here are a few tips you can use when naming your small business.
Take Time to Brainstorm
The first thing you should do is set aside some time for a brainstorming session. During this session, you’ll want to write down any ideas that pop into your head. To come up with ideas, there are a few things about your business you’ll want to think about:
- What is the goal of your business?
- How do you want people to feel when they hear your business name?
- Who is running the business?
- What advantage or specialty does your business bring to the table?
- What are some of your competitor’s names?
- Does the length of the name matter?
As you’re brainstorming, keep the above guidelines in mind, and jot down any keywords that you can think of. There are no wrong answers during a brainstorming session – write down everything you think of, no matter how ridiculous it may seem.
Ask for Input
Once you’ve gotten some of your ideas down on paper, ask friends and family for their input. Run your ideas by them and ask them to come up with some of their own. They may think of something that you missed or trigger something in your own mind that will lead you to the eventual name. The more ideas you can gather during this brainstorming phase, the better off you’ll be.
Start Narrowing Down Your Ideas
By now you should have a ton of ideas, both from yourself and from others. Now you’ll want to take some time to trim down your list to the few you think are the best. Throw away any of those ideas that are simply not practical or don’t make sense.
As your list starts to get smaller, begin checking to see which names are actually available. For instance, you may have ten name ideas for a pop-up shop you want to open, but 5 of them are already taken by other pop-up shop rentals in your area. This would cut your list in half and make your selection easier.
Decide on a Final Name
Work on getting your choices down to your top 2 or 3 favorites. From there, you can again ask others which one they like best or start coming up with some logo designs to see which ones will work out visually. Give yourself plenty of time to settle on a choice. Sometimes your favorite will change after a night’s sleep.
Once you settle on a name, you can begin registering it and making it official. You can register it with your local government, grab the domain name, or start printing up signs for you pop up shop rental.
Coming up with the right name can be a real challenge, but with a little bit of creative brainstorming and help from those around you, you can come up with the perfect name.
